Reflective cracking meets its match in an aramid-reinforced asphalt interlayer from Surface Tech

In 2019, the BATT Lab worked with Surface Tech, a producer of aramid-reinforced composite asphalt (ARCA) solutions, to successfully develop a new asphalt pavement interlayer that bypasses expensive third-party contractors and provides superior protection against reflective cracking in asphalt pavements.

The standard one-inch thick ARMI™ interlayer can provide unparalleled crack resistance, and it can be modified to meet specifications required for any pavement’s particular performance needs and expectations.

It’s engineered to be hot-mixed and hot-laid to stay in place and withstand the extreme production temperatures of asphalt without change. Surface Tech’s wax-bound aramid fibers create a three-dimensional reinforcement matrix that fortifies the interlayer to guard against reflective cracking, thermal cracking, and surface crack water penetration.

Pavers need only mix 2.1 ounces of Surface Tech’s polymer aramid fibers into any WMA or HMA drum or batch asphalt operation and pave as usual. The resulting ARMI interlayer also provides unparalleled resistance to rutting and fatigue due to improved ESAL (Equivalent Single Axel Load) capacity.

The advantages of this superior interlayer solution add up to pavements that last longer and reduce costly maintenance and replacement over time.

Can the BATT Lab help you take your new product or solution to the next level? You bet. Contact us at info@blankenshipasphalttech.com, or visit our website.
