Balanced Mix Design
Performance-Based Mix Evaluation Requires More Than Test Results
Our Approach
BMD is not simply a matter of running performance tests. It requires technical interpretation and informed decision-making.
What Balanced Mix Design Involves
Balanced Mix Design evaluates mixture performance using laboratory testing intended to better predict field behavior and guide mix optimization.
Depending on project goals and agency requirements, BMD evaluations may include:
Hamburg Wheel-Track Testing (HWT) for rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility
IDEAL-CT or other cracking performance evaluations
Indirect tensile performance characterization
Binder performance evaluation
Aggregate characterization
Aging protocols
Density and volumetric analysis
Production mix verification
Comparative evaluation of additives, recycled materials, or alternative formulations
Test selection and performance thresholds vary by agency, specification framework, and project application.
When the Results Don’t Align
One of the most common BMD challenges occurs when performance results conflict.
Examples include:
Volumetrics that satisfy specification requirements while cracking performance falls short
Improved rutting resistance accompanied by reduced cracking performance
Changes in RAP or binder content that shift durability outcomes
Additives that improve one performance metric while creating tradeoffs elsewhere
Production variability that changes laboratory expectations
At that point, the issue is no longer obtaining more data. The issue is understanding what the data indicates and identifying practical adjustment pathways.
Here’s a recent blog post that provides two strategies to try if results don’t align.
Why Interpretation Matters
Performance testing identifies behavior. Interpretation identifies next steps.
BATT works with producers, agencies, consultants, and product developers to evaluate test outcomes within the broader context of mixture behavior, materials interaction, constructability, and performance expectations.
That experience helps clients answer critical questions such as:
Is the issue aggregate structure, binder behavior, aging sensitivity, or another contributing factor?
Would a binder grade adjustment improve cracking resistance without compromising rutting performance?
Is RAP content influencing flexibility beyond acceptable limits?
Could additive selection or dosage improve balance?
Is the issue laboratory conditioning, specimen preparation, production variability, or true material performance?
The goal is not simply to report pass/fail outcomes. It’s to provide technically grounded direction.
BATT’s Balanced Mix Design Experience
BATT brings practical experience in asphalt mixture evaluation, performance testing, forensic investigation, materials troubleshooting, and product development support.
That broader perspective matters because Balanced Mix Design decisions are rarely isolated laboratory questions. They often involve production realities, specification constraints, material limitations, and long-term pavement performance considerations.
BATT supports clients by:
Performing performance-focused mixture evaluation
Interpreting conflicting or borderline test results
Identifying likely performance drivers
Advising on practical mix adjustment strategies
Evaluating alternative materials and additive approaches
Supporting specification-driven testing requirements
Assisting with troubleshooting during mix refinement
Clients rely on BATT not only for accurate testing, but for experienced technical guidance that helps move projects forward.
